One Dry Day

Conservatory roof replacement questions, answered before you book

These are the conservatory roof replacement questions that come up before anyone books a survey, answered in a sentence or three each. The short version: a 75 mm insulated panel roof starts from £3,000 fitted on a small conservatory, the survey costs nothing, the price after it is fixed in writing, and most roofs go on in one dry day. The detail is below, grouped the way the job runs.

Price and survey

Size sets most of the price and shape adjusts it, because every extra face means more cutting and more joins to seal. Guide figures are fitted prices before extras such as roof lights or spotlights. The survey turns them into one fixed written figure for your roof, and there is no charge for it and no deposit taken beforehand. Our conservatory roof cost page breaks the numbers down, and the survey walk-through shows what gets measured.

The roof itself

Each panel is a 75 mm foam board bonded between aluminium skins, laid on your existing glazing bars once the surveyor has passed them. It loses heat at about 0.43 W/m²K, against about 1.6 to 2.4 for old 25 mm polycarbonate. On rain noise we can only quote what has been measured: the lab figures below are for plastic and glass, and nobody has published one for conservatory panels like ours. Our page on how loud rain is on a conservatory roof explains the tests.

Lab heavy rain, sound intensity level
  • Polycarbonate, 25 mm64.6 dB
  • Glass, double glazed laminated52.0 dB

BRE IP 2/06, 40 mm an hour lab rain. No published figure exists for conservatory panel roofs.

Fitting day and weather

The old roof is stripped in sections, and whichever part is open gets covered if a shower blows through, but the seals need dry surfaces to grip, so we book dry days and move the date when the forecast is against us. The chart shows dry working days by month for the average town in our rain ledger, where you can also look up your own town. The full order of the day is on our fitting process page.

After fitting

Once the last cap is on, the roof needs very little from you. A rinse and a gentle brush once or twice a year, a clear gutter every autumn, and no pressure washer near the seals. The 10 year insurance backed guarantee covers the roof we fitted, and its terms sit on our guarantee and care page. Every question, answered

How much does an insulated panel roof cost?

Fitted and before extras, guide prices start from £3,000 up to 12 m², £4,000 for 12 to 25 m² and £5,000 above 25 m². Your survey gives the exact figure.

Why does the shape of my conservatory change the price?

More faces mean more cutting and more joins to seal. Against an equal sized lean-to, a P-shape adds about 18%, a gable end about 12%, a Victorian about 10% and an Edwardian about 5%.

Is the survey free?

Yes. There is nothing to pay before or at the survey, and no deposit is taken to book it.

Can the price go up after the survey?

No. The written price is fixed for the roof it describes, and only moves if you change the job, such as adding a roof light.

Do I need planning permission?

Putting a new roof on a conservatory you already have rarely needs planning permission. We check your own situation when we survey.

Will my frame take a panel roof?

Most sound uPVC and aluminium frames can, and timber ones often can too if the wood is healthy. The surveyor looks over the bars, ring beam and dwarf wall before pricing.

How much warmer will the room be?

The roof loses heat at about 0.43 W/m²K, between a fifth and a quarter of what old 25 mm polycarbonate loses. The glass walls stay glass, so the room still cools faster than a brick extension.

Will the room be darker?

Light then comes in through the glass walls rather than from above, so the room is shadier, which suits south facing rooms. North facing ones often take a roof light or two.

Will rain be quieter on a panel roof?

We cannot give you a number: nobody has published a rain noise test for conservatory panels like ours, and we have not measured them. What we can say is that there are no hollow flutes and the foam is bonded solid to both skins, unlike polycarbonate, which measured 64.6 dB in lab heavy rain.

What colours can I have?

White, light grey or anthracite grey outside, with a smooth white ceiling inside. We have also fitted roofs onto copper tone and oak effect frames.

Can I have lights in the ceiling?

Yes. The panel ceiling takes LED spotlights, and glazed roof lights can go in where you want daylight from above.

How long does fitting take?

Most roofs go on in one day. Bigger or more complicated shapes take two.

What happens if it rains on the day?

We only open one section at a time and cover it if a shower comes. If the forecast says the day will be wet, we move the date rather than seal onto damp surfaces.

Which month is best to book?

In our rain data August gave the most dry working days nationally, about 25, and September the fewest, about 19. Every month had enough for a roof.

Can you fit a roof in winter?

Yes. The average town had about 22 dry working days in December and 23 in January; we just pick the date with the forecast.

What do I need to do before the day?

Move furniture and anything fragile away from the walls, and leave a clear way round to the outside of the conservatory.

What happens to the old roof?

We take it away with us at the end of the day and recycle what we can.

What does the guarantee cover?

A 10 year insurance backed guarantee comes with the roof we fit. The walls, doors and windows we leave untouched are not part of it.

How do I look after the roof?

Rinse it with a hose, brush off marks with a soft brush and mild soap, keep the gutter clear, and keep pressure washers away from the seals.

Where does your rain data come from?

From the Met Office UKV 2 km weather model, through Open-Meteo: 1,754,400 hourly readings for 100 English towns across 2024 and 2025.

What is a noise night?

A night between 11pm and 7am with at least one hour of rain at 0.5 mm an hour or more. The average town had 65 of them a year.
