Cookies and storage in plain words
A cookie is a scrap of text a site leaves with your browser, which the browser hands back each time you open another page. Browser storage is the same idea, except the text stays on your device and is never sent to the server. Either way, it lets a site recall something you did a moment or a week ago.
The one thing that is always on
Your answer to the cookie banner is saved in browser storage, so the banner does not reappear on every page you open. It contains your on or off setting for analytics and for advertising, and the time you chose, and nothing that identifies you. Without it the site could not keep to the choice you made, which is why it needs no permission.
Analytics, only with your yes
Switch analytics on and Google Analytics starts to load. Its cookies count visits, show which pages get read, how people found the site and whether a visit ended with a request on the quote journey. Google runs the service and processes the data for us, and keeps it for 14 months. That tells us, for instance, whether people actually use the Rain Ledger or give up after one town. Leave the switch off and none of this loads.
Advertising, a separate switch
Advertising has its own switch and starts in the off position. The site runs no adverts and loads no advertising service at present. The switch is there so that nothing of that kind could ever start without your say, and any advertising cookie would be added to the table below before it was used. Saying yes to analytics never says yes to advertising, and the reverse is also true.
Every cookie the site can use
Lifetimes count from your last visit, because each visit renews them.
| Name | What it does | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Cookie choice (browser storage) | Remembers your answer to the banner so the site can follow it. Always on. | Until you clear your browser data |
| _ga (Google Analytics) | Tells one visit from another so visitors can be counted. Analytics only. | 2 years |
| _ga_ followed by an ID (Google Analytics) | Keeps track of the current visit and the pages in it. Analytics only. | 2 years |
| Advertising cookies | None set at present. Any added later would appear here first. | Not applicable |
Changing your choice later
At the foot of every page there is a link called Cookie settings. It opens the preference centre again, where you can accept everything, reject everything, or turn analytics and advertising on or off one by one. The new setting takes hold from the next page you open. Clearing the stored data for this site in your browser settings ends the same way: the banner returns on your next visit and asks afresh.
